CARBON CAPTURE

Carbon capture is broad term that includes many different types of technologies:

  • Removal of CO2 from the flue gas of combustion systems before it is exhausted to the atmosphere (post-combustion capture)
  • Separation of CO2 from hydrogen in shifted synthesis gas (pre-combustion capture)
  • Advanced combustion technologies that inherently produce a nearly-pure CO2 product gas
  • Removal of CO2 from the atmosphere (direct air capture)

For any carbon capture technology, the resultant CO2 must be sequestered or otherwise permanently stored to avoid release into the atmosphere. Carbon capture with permanent storage has been demonstrated at large scale several places throughout the world.

At the Advanced Energy Systems Research Facility, we are helping advance development of carbon capture via Gasification, Oxy-Fuel Combustion, and Chemical Looping Combustion.
